Over 4 billion people lack access to basic, quality care. Healthcare remains a privilege of geography, resulting in millions of needless deaths—a reality that is unacceptable and demands bold reimagining of how care is delivered in the digital age.
Four million community health workers (CHWs) already bring care to the doorstep. When equipped with the right tools, training, and support, they can deliver transformative impact. Yet most digital health solutions fall short. Meanwhile, those who know their communities best have no say in shaping the tools they rely on.
For fifteen years, Medic has worked alongside CHWs, implementers, and governments to design and scale human-centered digital tools powered by the open-source Community Health Toolkit (CHT).
The CHT’s reach has grown an extraordinary 340% to 182,676 equipped health workers across 24 countries, delivering essential care to an estimated 90 million people. Kenya’s CHT-based electronic Community Health Information System—the single largest national community health platform deployed in Africa—demonstrates what’s possible when open technology, government ownership, and a committed community of practice come together.
What got us here is only the foundation.
Scale doesn’t come from one organization alone. It comes from an entire ecosystem of local innovators, governments, and communities driving transformation together.
As we look toward the future, Medic will build on the CHT’s proven foundation – catalyzing a community of 75+ organizations to:
(1) drive platform excellence at scale;
(2) pioneer innovations for the last mile;
(3) enable local ownership for long-term sustainability.
This is how we will equip 350,000 CHWs and deliver care to 175 million people by 2028.
